How Much Sugar Do People Eat?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that less than 10 percent of a person’s diet come from added sugars. That means about 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men.

It’s estimated that the average American consumes about 20 teaspoons — or 80 grams — of sugar per day. Added sugar hides in hundreds of packaged products like low-fat yogurt, fruit juices, energy drinks, cereal, granola bars — even dressings and pasta sauces.

It’s no wonder Type 2 Diabetes, obesity, heart disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and other chronic diseases are rapidly rising in the US.

Making your clients aware of how much sugar is in everything that they eat will help them get motivated to make a big change in their sugar habit.
